NEW YORK — Every time Scott Kingery snares a deep fly ball to the gap or against the wall, Gabe Kapler sees the future in center field. The Phillies could have a long-term hole to fill there — Odúbel Herrera’s punishment extends to the end of this season, but the Phillies could pursue a trade before then — and Kingery looks more and more like someone who can handle center. But he also looks capable at third base. And, at second base, he could be a Gold Glover. He can handle left field. He improved at shortstop last year.

This is a game Kapler likes to play. Someone asks him where he envisions Kingery. He grins.

“Scott Kingery could be an everyday center fielder, right fielder, left fielder, shortstop, second baseman or third baseman,” Kapler said. “If you give him everyday reps at that position, he will be a plus defender at any one of those positions. And I believe that wholeheartedly and strongly.”
